Spam or legit email: How do you know?

IU’s recent influx of “Wire Transfer Canceled” emails is an effective case study in recognizing spam/phishing.

The University Information Security Office posted pointers on how to spot fraud:

1. Pause to consider whether you’re expecting a notification like this, at this particular account, from this particular sender.

2. Hover over the included link with your mouse (do not follow it) and see if it goes somewhere reputable.

3. Ask colleagues or classmates if they received similar emails. Is it likely that we all had wire transfers fail within a short timespan?

Remember: when it comes to spam/phishing, if it seems too good to be true, it almost always is.
