IU’s IT communicators bring home 2009 SIGUCCS awards

IU’s IT communicators won a Best of Category award and four Awards of Excellence at the 2009 Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services (SIGUCCS) conference in St. Louis, Missouri. The SIGUCCS awards go to leaders in the field of IT communication in higher education.

Oncourse CLIU’s entry in the Electronic How-to Guides, the IT Training and Education demo “Site Setup: Reorder Tools for a Site,” won Best in Category. The demo walks users through various Oncourse CL features, to show how to take advantage of the interface and make the most of the environment. A second video tutorial, “Using the Tandberg Video Conferencing System at IU,” won an Award of Excellence in the same category.

Several of IU’s Awards of Excellence went to campaigns and products focused on communicating to students about IT, a goal outlined in the latest UITS strategic plan, Empowering People.NU2IT

Among the 2009 SIGUCCS Awards of Excellence was the IU entry in the the General Service Campaign Materials category, for the 2009 NU2IT@IU Orientation campaign. The 2009 NU2IT@IU Orientation campaign introduced students at IU to the IT environment through a variety of outlets, from orientation videos and informational hand-outs, to the nu2it.iu.edu web presence and USB flash drives.

The second award was granted to the NU2IT@IU Orientation video in the Long Promotional Video/Audio category. New students viewed the video as a part of 2009 Orientation. They were produced for IU Bloomington and IUPUI, as well as several regional campuses. The videos highlighted the range of IT resources and support that students should know about as they embark on their academic careers.

NU2ITThe third NU2IT@IU-related Award of Excellence was in the Software Distribution Physical Media category, given to the NU2IT@IU 1GB flash drive bracelet. In its first year of deployment, the flash drive was handed out this year to new students as they set up their IT accounts at Orientation. The flash drive contained an html interface to match the NU2IT@IU branding, as well as the Orientation video and links to numerous UITS resources.
